Marijn Brussaard and Niek Vanoosterweyk
Marijn Brussaard and Niek Vanoosterweyck share a background in mime, interdisciplinary performances and installations that blur the boundaries between the digital and the physical.
During their residency, they used motion capture and choreography to explore the relationship between the KUKA robot and themselves to see who is in control. Do they control the robot or does the robot control them through the way it is built and how they see it through its functionalities?
By translating a performer’s movements into simple data sets that control the robot arm, they tried to bring to life themes and actions from Mark Twain’s “A Dog’s Tale.
The power struggle between humans and animals, as described in the story, was applied to the human-robot relationship with the industrial Kuka robot. Themes of autonomy and agency were explored in three scenes: the robot acts as a puppeteer, then performs a mime etude alongside a human and plays with a balloon as a puppy.
