Mahler & Kokoschka
Tell me everything you know about love.
Back in theaters thanks to overwhelming succes!
It’s the early days of the roaring twenties. Alma Mahler wants to be the ultimate muze. She wants to be adored. Oskar Kokoschka is a artist desperately in love and presents the perfect victim. They start an affair that soon turns into the gossip of the day in Avantgarde Vienna. Mahler is uncormfortable by the intensity of their love, and leaves Kokoschka. Desperate to keep her, he creates a doll of her liking.
Director Ulrike Quade and writer Hanna van Wieringen were inspired by the short-lived but intense love-affair between the artists. They built Alma an extravagant altar, and let let Alma Mahler (Aafke Buringh) and Oskar Kokoschka (Marijn Klaver) relive their shameless affair unfazed by the world around them.
Alma: “It start with me, yes. I am older, so I’m the better narrator.”
Mahler & Kokoschka is co-produced by Bellevue Lunchtheater. The play premiered on 31 March 2018. In the spring of 2020 we take the play on tour through the Netherlands.
Mahler & Kokoschka is supported by: Fonds Podiumkunsten, Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst and Lira Fonds.
