Research
At Ulrike Quade Company, our focus is not only on puppet and object theatre, but also on the exciting possibilities offered by technology. For us, technology is not an isolated addition but an integral part of the creative process, through which we explore new forms of storytelling and artistic expression. We do this by integrating technology into our performances and by actively collaborating with scientists, technological innovators and other artists to discover what the dramaturgical and social power of technology in theatre can be.
Our approach: experimental and multidisciplinary
Working with technology requires a different type of creative process. Therefore, we adopt a flexible, experimental approach reminiscent of ‘agile’ working methods. We start with prototypes, test them at different stages of development and adapt them based on audience reactions and interaction with technology. This process helps us better understand the imagination of new technologies and the audience’s reaction.
“Yesterday‘s puppets are tomorrow’s robots.”
We not only work with robotics, but also explore the impact of other technologies, such as mixed reality, virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI), to see how these new forms of technology can help us create undiscovered artistic worlds.
We look wider than just technology itself; we explore the social, philosophical and societal implications of technology. Here, we involve not only engineers and tech experts, but also sociologists, philosophers and human-centred design experts, who help us reflect on how technology affects human behaviour and society. We place technology in the broader context of social issues and the role of art in these changes.

Projects
In collaboration with Utrecht University, Utrecht School of the Arts and VU University Amsterdam, Ulrike Quade Company is working on a multi-year research project on the use of robotics and its impact on society.
At Center Stage Robotics, we research industrial robots and robotics in theatrical and performative settings. We work with four partners for this purpose, and we also offer space to four artists during various residencies.
Technology and art
Ulrike Quade: artistic researcher
Ulrike Quade brings a unique artistic and research-oriented perspective to the world of technology and art. With her experience in working with puppet and object theatre, her expertise in combining art and technology, and her deep engagement with the scientific and philosophical aspects of new technologies, she is a valuable partner for projects seeking to explore the boundaries of both domains.
Ulrike’s research is always focused on creating new forms of experience for audiences, exploring both the technical possibilities and human aspects of technology in a broader social framework.
