Stephanie Pan
Stephanie Pan is a voice artist, composer and interdisciplinary creator, performer and curator. Her work focuses on the idea of pure communication: a form of contact that transcends the boundaries of conventional and social constructions of language. Through a unique combination of theater, performance art, experimental music, improvisation, controlled chaos, pop music and classical music, Stephanie explores the boundaries of the body and voice.
Biography
Stephanie holds a Master’s degree in Theater from Das Arts: Advanced Studies in the Performing Arts (AHK), a BA in Music and Applied Mathematics from UC Berkeley, and a First Phase Diploma, with distinction, in Classical Singing from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.
Residency
During her residency, Stephanie Pan embraces the KUKA robot in her creative process. She explores the potential of the KUKA robot as a musical instrument, asking questions such as: Does the robot have the capacity to relate to music? Can the KUKA create its own music? What does the KUKA’s voice sound like? And how do you compose music in dialogue with an industrial robot?
During this residency, all facets of the KUKA as an instrument will be explored, leading to the beginnings of a contemporary opera composition. The insights Stephanie gains during this process contribute to new practices in the composition of modern opera. Among other things, she explores the fine line between mathematics and inspiration, and offers new perspectives on the role and voice of the KUKA robot in future operas.

Center Stage Robotics
Center Stage Robotics is a research project led by Ulrike Quade Company, in collaboration with visual artist Bram Ellens, programmer Rick van Dugteren of Event Robotics and Creative Robotics, and Prof. Dr. Maaike Bleeker of Utrecht University. The project investigates the use of industrial robots and robotics in theatrical and performative settings.
The aim of Centre Stage Robotics is to provide the performing arts sector with inspiration, knowledge and new ways of working. At the same time, it explores how knowledge from the performing arts, especially puppetry, can inspire the world of robotics and help shape a future with robotics.
Residency program
As part of Centre Stage Robotics, Ulrike Quade Company offers residencies for artists. During these residencies, participants have the opportunity to work intensively with the KUKA robot. The program also includes workshops and leads to presentations where the insights gained are shared.
